Hydroponics technology
In hydroponics the roots have no buffer. The system has to be the buffer.
Without soil to absorb mistakes, a pump failure, a pH drift or a hot afternoon can damage a crop within hours. Continuous monitoring and automatic dosing are not extras here — they are what makes hydroponics work.
About hydroponics farming
Hydroponics grows plants with their roots in a nutrient solution or an inert medium such as cocopeat, instead of soil. It uses far less water than soil growing because the solution is recirculated, grows fast, and works where there is little or poor land.
Common systems in Kenya include NFT (nutrient film technique) channels for leafy greens and herbs, deep water culture (DWC), drip-fed cocopeat bags and troughs for tomato and capsicum, and hydroponic fodder units that grow barley or maize sprouts for dairy cattle.

Solution chemistry
- Inline EC sensorNutrient strength measured continuously, not by a pen once a day.
- Inline pH sensorWith automatic pH-up / pH-down dosing to hold the band.
- A/B nutrient dosingPeristaltic dosing pumps top up nutrient to the EC set point.
Root environment
- Dissolved oxygenConfirms the roots can breathe; drives aeration.
- Solution temperatureChiller or shading triggers before the reservoir gets too warm.
- Reservoir levelAutomatic top-up and a low-level alarm.
Reliability
- Pump and flow monitoringAn immediate alert if flow stops, day or night.
- Power backup alertingKnow the moment mains fails, before the channels dry.
- Air temperature & humidityFor the growing room or greenhouse around the system.
Target ranges
The numbers we keep hydroponics inside
General ranges. Your crop, variety, altitude and agronomist set the final values.
| Factor | Target | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Solution pH | 5.5–6.5 | Most crops; 5.8–6.2 is a common target |
| EC — leafy greens & herbs | ~1.2–2.0 mS/cm | Crop- and stage-dependent |
| EC — fruiting crops | ~2.0–3.5 mS/cm | Tomato, capsicum, cucumber |
| Solution temperature | 18–24 °C | Warmer water holds less oxygen |
| Dissolved oxygen | above ~5–6 mg/L | — |
Questions
Hydroponics: FAQ
Is hydroponic fodder worth it for dairy?
Hydroponic fodder units grow green feed in about a week in a small space, which helps in dry seasons. The economics depend on seed cost, water and power; monitoring humidity, temperature and irrigation keeps mould — the main failure — under control.
Can I start hydroponics without automation?
Yes, many growers start with manual EC and pH testing. Automation earns its place when the system grows or when nobody can check it several times a day.
